This week, I had the privilege of attending the ECEHH Collaborative Forum for Environment and Human Health at Exeter University's Tremough Innovation Centre. I left feeling inspired, encouraged, and more convinced than ever that Nettle Revolution is part of a much bigger movement - one that is redefining how we understand the relationship between nature, health, and human wellbeing.
One conversation stayed with me long after the meeting had ended.
How do we prove the value of nature?
For decades, our healthcare systems have understandably focused on medicines, treatments, and interventions that can be prescribed, measured, and packaged. Yet some of the most powerful influences on our health cannot be contained within a blister pack.
Time spent outdoors.
Connection with nature.
Community.
Creativity.
Purpose.
Movement.
These are often described as "nice to have, when in reality they may be among our greatest investments in lifelong health.
The discussion centred on creating new ways of recognising and measuring the social value of nature-based activities. How can we gather meaningful evidence that demonstrates improvements in health, prevention, wellbeing, and stronger communities?
This is exactly where Nettle Revolution can contribute.
Every workshop I lead is about far more than learning about the humble stinging nettle. It is about reconnecting people with the natural world, encouraging curiosity, slowing down, noticing the seasons, building confidence, sharing knowledge, and creating friendships. People leave not only with new skills, but often feeling calmer, more hopeful, and more connected. These are outcomes that matter. They deserve to be recognised, valued, and measured.
As Nettle Revolution grows, I want to help develop ways of demonstrating the tangible value of nature-based experiences. Not simply because I believe in their power, but because future generations deserve a healthcare system that values prevention just as highly as treatment.
Imagine a future where spending time in nature, learning traditional plant knowledge, creating with natural fibres, and sharing meaningful community experiences are recognised as essential contributors to healthier lives.
That is the direction Nettle Revolution is moving towards.
Health. Prevention. Community. Wellbeing.
These are not separate ideas. Together, they form the foundation of a healthier and more resilient society.
The humble nettle is simply the beginning of a much bigger conversation.
What if the greatest medicine is not always found in a pharmacy, but growing quietly along a hedgerow?
What if the sting can be the cure?
At Nettle Revolution, our mission continues to grow beyond the nettle itself. We are exploring how nature-based experiences can be recognised, valued, and measured as an essential part of a healthier future. By working alongside researchers, healthcare professionals, communities, and individuals, we can help create a new framework in which nature is no longer viewed as an optional extra, but as a vital partner in prevention, resilience, and lifelong wellbeing.
The future of healthcare may not lie solely in what can be dispensed in a blister pack. It may also be found in what we choose to protect, nurture, experience, and value every day in the natural world.
Perhaps the greatest challenge is not proving that nature has value.
It is learning how to measure what has always been there.
