Art & Serendipity in London
During a recent trip to London, I experienced one of those rare days where art, nature, and chance encounters wove together into something truly special.
A Walk to the Serpentine Gallery
I began by meeting a dear friend at the elegant Albert Bridge on the Thames. From there, we strolled through Hyde Park to the Serpentine Gallery.
The exhibition I was heading for had been recommended by one of my Airbnb guests, an art critic named Katy, who stayed with me in June. We had discussed my love of nature and, while visiting Tate St Ives to see Liliane Lijn: Arise Alive, she suggested I see Thoughts in the Roots by Italian artist Giuseppe Penone.
Giuseppe Penone: Thoughts in the Roots
At 78, Penone continues to astonish with his deep connection to the natural world. His work in Thoughts in the Roots invites us to explore the hidden layers of life.
One of the highlights for me was a room entirely lined with laurel (bay) leaves. The fragrance and texture, though somewhat faded since the springtime installation, still felt immersive, like stepping inside a living artwork. I was equally moved by his carved “book trees,” where wood and story seemed to merge, whispering of growth, time, and memory.
If you are looking for London art exhibitions in 2025 that combine sculpture, sensory experience, and a profound connection to nature, this show at the Serpentine Gallery is a real treat. It runs until 7 September 2025.
Serendipity and The Nettle Cookbook
While exploring the gallery, I engaged in a conversation with one of the stewards. To my surprise, Stella suggested I connect with someone at the Natural History Museum. A few days later, this thread of serendipity led me to meet Vivian Tuffney, who has worked there for 35 years and is also the author of The Nettle Cookbook: Recipes for Foragers and Foodies.
Naturally, I couldn’t resist purchasing the book. Meeting Viv felt like one of those rare alignments, as if the universe had quietly arranged it. We shared stories, laughter, and of course, a joyful selfie to remember the moment. For anyone interested in foraging, wild food, and the many uses of nettles, her cookbook is a true treasure.
Art, Nature, and Nettles
This day in London reminded me that when we step out into the world with openness, art and nature often conspire to lead us exactly where we are meant to be. For me, that path often circles back to nettles, a plant that embodies resilience, creativity, and deep connection with the natural world.
